Overview

Figure skating is a sport performed on ice in which athletes skate individually, in pairs, or in groups while performing jumps, spins, steps, and choreographed movements. The sport combines physical skill, balance, timing, and musical interpretation. Skaters are judged on both technical elements and overall presentation.

Figure skating developed from early forms of ice skating used for travel and recreation in Europe. By the nineteenth century, skating had become a formal activity, with clubs forming in countries such as England and Austria. The first figure skating competitions were held in the late 1800s, and the sport was included in the Olympic Games in 1908, making it one of the oldest Olympic sports.

Today, figure skating is governed internationally by the International Skating Union and is practiced at recreational and elite levels around the world.

Rules and Regulations

Figure skating competitions follow rules set by the International Skating Union and national governing bodies. Skaters perform programs within a set time limit that includes required elements such as jumps, spins, and step sequences. Each element has a base value, which is adjusted by judges based on execution quality.

Programs are evaluated using a points based judging system. Technical specialists identify elements, while judges score execution and presentation. Deductions are applied for falls, illegal elements, or exceeding time limits. Skaters must meet age and eligibility requirements to compete at certain levels and events.
