List of Unusual Winter Olympic Sports

The Winter Olympics are best known for sports like skiing and ice hockey, but over the years they have also featured some strange, creative, and short-lived events. Here are eight of the most unusual Winter Olympic sports from the past and present.

  1. Ski Ballet – A freestyle skiing event where athletes performed choreographed dance moves on skis to music. It looked more like figure skating on snow and was later dropped.
  2. Ice Stock Sport (Eisstockschießen) – Similar to curling, but with heavy stocks instead of stones. It was unusual because it came from traditional Alpine winter games.
  3. Skijoring – Competitors were pulled by horses while skiing. The mix of animals, speed, and skis made it one of the strangest Olympic demonstrations.
  4. Speed Skiing – Skiers raced straight downhill at extreme speeds. It was unusual because there were no turns and safety risks were very high.
  5. Bandy – A team sport similar to ice hockey but played with a ball on a much larger ice field. It looked like a mix of hockey and soccer on ice.
  6. Skeleton – Athletes race head-first down an ice track on a small sled. The head-first position makes it especially risky and visually dramatic.
  7. Dog Sled Racing – At the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in 1932 there was a dog sled racing demonstration event, in which teams of six dogs pulled a sled and rider across the snow.
  8. Alpinism – An Olympic Alpinism Prize was awarded at the Winter Olympics in 1924, 1932 and 1936 for the most notable alpinism feat accomplished during the previous four years.
