Year of Debut for every FIFA World Cup team

Every team at the FIFA World Cup has a starting point, their first appearance on football’s biggest stage. This list tracks when each nation made that debut, from the pioneering teams of the early tournaments to the newest arrivals in the modern era.

In the early decades of the World Cup, there were naturally many debutantes. As football spread and more countries joined FIFA, the pool of potential entrants expanded, but repeat participants became more common.

In more recent years, new debuts have been less frequent, that is until the tournament expansion in recent years. The increase to a 48-team format in 2026 significantly increases opportunities for nations to qualify, leading to a fresh wave of first-time participants.
