Australian Football Playing Positions
Here is a list of the main paying positions for Australian football, listed from the backline to the forward line. There are 18 players per team on the field. The forward players main function is to score goals. The midfield players pass the ball up the field, and the back players prevent the opponents from scoring. The exact positions may vary. There is no off-side.

- Full Back: Defends closest to goal, stops key forwards.
- Back Pocket: Supports the full back, marks small forwards.
- Centre Half Back: Key defender who stops attacks through the middle.
- Halfback Flank: Runs the ball out of defence and rebounds.
- Followers (Ruckman & Ruck Rover): Contest ball-ups and follow play around the ground.
- Rover: Wins ground balls and creates clearances.
- Wing: Runs along the sides, links defence and attack.
- Centre: Controls play through the midfield and delivers the ball forward.
- Half Forward Flank: Creates scoring chances and applies forward pressure.
- Centre Half Forward: Main target in attack, sets up scoring plays.
- Forward Pocket: Crumbs near goal and pressures defenders.
- Full Forward: Key goal kicker positioned close to goal.
