Triathlon

The distances given above are for Olympic triathlon. The total time stated for a triathlon result includes the time taken to change between the three events. This applies to all forms of triathlon.

DETAILED RULES

Variations of triathlon

Sprint
750 metre (0.47 miles) swim, 22 kilometre (14 mile) bike ride, 5 kilometre (3.1 miles) run
Half-Ironman
1.9 kilometre (1.2 mile) swim, 90 kilometre (56 mile) cycling, 21.1 kilometre (13.1 mile) run
Ironman
3.86 kilometre (2.4 mile) swim, 180 kilometre (112 mile) bike, 42.2 kilometre (26.2 mile) run

- Note that the name Ironman applies regardless of participant gender.

Aquathlon
This is usually a training event for a full triathlon, but there are separate aquathlon championships. It consists of a run, a swim, then another run. Distances can vary. The following are examples.

2.5 kilometre (1.5 mile) run, 1 kilometre (0.62 mile) swim and 2.5 kilometre (1.5 mile) run.

3 kilometre (1.8 mile) run, 1.5 kilometre (0.93 mile) swim and 3 kilometre (1.8 mile) run.

Duathlon
This is usually a training event for a full triathlon, but there are separate duathlon championships. It consists of a run, cycling, then another run. Distances can vary. The following are examples.

5 kilometre (3.1 miles) run, 15 or 30 or 40 kilometre (9.3 miles or 18.6 miles or 24.9 miles) cycle, 5 kilometre (3.1 mile) run

10 kilometre (6.2 miles) run, 20 kilometre (12.5 miles) cycle, 5 kilometres (3.1 miles)

3.2 kilometres (2 mile) run, 16.1 kilometres (10 mile) cycle, 3.2 kilometres (2 mile) run

3.7 kilometres (2.4 miles) run, 21 kilometres (13 miles) cycle, 6.44 kilometres (4 miles) run

Winter Triathlon
This consists of a run, mountain biking, and then cross-country skiing. Distances can vary. The following are examples.

10 kilometre (6.2 mile) run, 20 kilometre (12.4 mile) mountain biking, 10 kilometre (6.2 mile) cross country skiing

9 kilometre (5.6 mile) run , 15 kilometre (9.3 mile) mountain biking , 12 kilometre (7.5 mile) cross country skiing
