Olympic Sports in Which The Participant Throws Something
Here is a list of sports at the 2028 LA Summer Olympics in which the sport, or at least one key element of it, involves athletes throwing an object. These events rely on projecting an implement with accuracy, power, or strategic purpose, forming an essential part of either the scoring system or the overall.
- Athletics - competitors project implements as part of field events where distance and technique determine results - Javelin, Hammer Throw, Shot Put. Some of these throwing events are also part of the multi-event decathlon and heptathlon.
- Baseball / Softball - players deliver the ball by throwing for pitching, fielding and defensive plays that shape the contest.
- Basketball - scoring and passing rely on players propelling the ball through the air to teammates or the basket.
- Handball - play revolves around throwing the ball to pass, create scoring chances and finish attacks.
- Water Polo - players throw the ball to pass and to attempt goals while treading or swimming.
- Rugby Sevens - passing and tactical plays depend on accurately throwing the ball between players during open play.
- Football (Soccer) – the throw-in requires players to return the ball into play with a controlled overhead throw, and the goal keeper may sometimes throw the ball to his defenders.
- Cricket – bowling involves delivering the ball with a regulated throwing-like action to challenge batters, and the ball is thrown around the field by fielders.
- Flag Football – offensive play is built around throwing the ball to initiate passes and create scoring opportunities.
Notes:
- Boxers also throw punches, and judokas throw their opponents, but no implement is thrown.
- Most of the Winter Olympics sports do not involve throwing, though you could include doubles figure skating or ice dancing in which the partner is thrown into the air, and the sliding of the rock in curling.
