10 Sports Names That Sound a Bit Rude (But Aren’t!)
Some sports have names or terminology that can sound a little questionable at first glance, especially to those unfamiliar with the game. But behind the cheeky sounding names, these are all perfectly legitimate, often highly skilled activities enjoyed by athletes around the world.
- Cornhole (or Corn Toss) – Nothing scandalous here, just tossing beanbags into holes. Though shouting “Nice hole!” across the park does tend to turn heads.
- Shuttlecock – Despite the name, it’s not a strange new bird species. It’s another name for the sport of badminton, and also the feathered projectile that gets whacked back and forth. Graceful, fast, and slightly snicker-inducing.
- Snatch – Weightlifters know it’s one of the toughest Olympic lifts. Others may wonder if the commentator should really be saying that word on live TV.
- Clean and Jerk – Another classic from weightlifting. The “clean” refers to lifting it up, the “jerk” to refers to throwing it overhead. Together, it’s an unintentionally hilarious phrase that sounds like an insult combo.
- Bog Snorkelling – Exactly what it sounds like: swimming through a muddy bog with a snorkel. There’s nothing elegant about it, but plenty of laughs (and smells).
- Pole Vault – The only sport where “grabbing your pole and getting it up” is official coaching advice. Impressive when done right, hilarious when attempted by amateurs.
- Cockfighting – It’s literally roosters fighting. But it’s banned for a reason. Animal cruelty’s never funny, even if the double meaning is.
- Rowing (Coxless Pair) – The coxswain steers the boat, unless it’s a “coxless” event, which sounds like something banned in public.
- Western Pleasure – Despite the suggestive name, this is a highly disciplined equestrian event where riders are judged on how calm, responsive, and smooth their horse is. The goal is for the horse to look like it’s having, well… a pleasant time.
- Pole Dancing – Athletic, graceful, and seriously hard work, though some still confuse it with nightlife entertainment. Trust us, the upper body strength alone deserves applause.
Notes
- One sport name that did not make the list, as the name of golf is innocuous, but there is suggestive sounding golf terminology such as “stroke play,” “approach shots,” and “hole-in-one,”.
- A sport that also did not make the list was Goose Pulling, a historical (and thankfully retired) event where people on horseback tried to yank the head off a goose. Sounds brutal, and the name doesn’t help. Let’s leave this one in the past where it belongs.
