Sports Names That Sound Funny (but are serious sports!)
Around the world, people have invented countless ways to compete, stay active, and have fun, and some of these activities just happen to come with names that sound more amusing than athletic. Here’s a look at some of the world’s funniest-sounding sports names, all of which are very real and seriously enjoyed by their participants.
- Bossaball – Volleyball meets soccer meets trampoline. Yes, you can spike the ball and do a backflip at the same time.
- Octopush – Another name for underwater hockey, which is exactly what it sounds like: hockey played at the bottom of a pool. The name alone sounds like a cartoon villain.
- Zorbing – Rolling down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball. It’s like being the hamster and the wheel.
- Chess Boxing – Alternate rounds of chess and boxing. One minute you’re calculating strategy; the next, you’re seeing stars.
- Broomball — a type of hockey in which the ball is hit with an implement they call a broom, obviously. There is another hockey type game Floorball, played on the floor, of course.
- Airsoft — sounds like a nice gentle game, but in actual fact requires shooting small plastic bullets in battlefield scenarios.
