Possible Future Winter Olympic Sports
The Winter Olympics are best known for sports such as alpine skiing, figure skating, and ice hockey, but the Olympic programme is constantly evolving. For the 2030 Winter Olympics, Nordic combined has been removed after being part of the Games for more than a century. New sports are also being introduced, with ski mountaineering making its Olympic debut in 2026 and freeride set to join the programme in 2030. What sport could be next? Here are some winter sports that have been suggested as potential additions to future Winter Olympic Games.

Winter cross-country Running is being considered
Some Possible Future Winter Olympic Sports
- Cyclo-cross – Riders race specially designed bicycles around snowy and icy circuits featuring tight corners, obstacles and sections where they must dismount and carry their bikes. It would be a winter adaptation of the popular cycling discipline.
- Cross-country Running – Athletes race over snow-covered trails and rolling terrain, relying on endurance, strength and footing rather than skis. Courses could include packed snow, forest tracks and moderate climbs.
- 3×3 Ice Hockey – A faster, more open version of ice hockey played with three skaters and a goalkeeper on each team. Shorter games and more space on the ice would lead to high-scoring, end-to-end action.
- Ice Climbing – Competitors race or climb technical routes on artificial ice walls using crampons and ice axes. Events could include speed climbing, where athletes race to the top, and lead climbing, where they tackle increasingly difficult routes.
- Ice Cross – Four ice skaters race head-to-head down a steep ice course featuring jumps, rollers and banked turns. Combining speed, agility and physical racing, it is one of the most exciting winter sports to watch.
- Speed Skiing – Skiers descend specially prepared slopes in a straight line, aiming to reach the highest possible speed. Elite competitors regularly exceed 200 km/h, making it the fastest non-motorised sport on Earth.
- Telemark Skiing – A traditional skiing discipline that combines alpine skiing, ski jumping and cross-country skiing. Olympic competition would most likely feature fast-paced sprint races where skiers perform the distinctive telemark turn while navigating jumps and gates.
- Bandy – A fast, skilful team sport played on ice with sticks and a ball on a field the size of a soccer pitch. Similar to ice hockey but with 11 players per team, it would become the largest team sport at the Winter Olympics.
- Winter Triathlon – Athletes compete over a course combining cross-country running, mountain biking and cross-country skiing, all on snow. Fast transitions between disciplines would test endurance and versatility.
- Ski Orienteering – Competitors navigate between checkpoints using only a map and compass while skiing across a network of snowy trails. Success depends on both skiing speed and smart route choices.
